Large, urban, mid-Atlantic teaching hospital

Challenge/Situation

To develop a strategic plan with high value strategic, operational, and relationship initiatives for the hospital’s orthopedic surgery department.

Process

Veralon conducted a thorough assessment of the orthopedic surgery department through a comprehensive interview process, and review of financial and operational data.

Veralon then facilitated three planning sessions with a steering committee, comprised of both physicians and administrators. These sessions focused on:

  • Identifying strategic vision, goals, and priorities based on the results of the departmental assessment
  • Reviewing and prioritizing among eleven key potential initiatives
  • Aligning physician and hospital interests
  • Designing a strategic implementation plan, with high-level budgets, timelines and responsibilities for five key areas

Results

The improvement plan was enthusiastically adopted by the Steering Committee, with physician participants highly involved in implementation. The cooperative nature of the planning efforts have positioned the department for future growth and increased collaboration between administrators and physicians.
